Our Economic Opportunity Strategy
Resources available to most youth and young adults aged 16 to 24 to navigate educational and employment options, particularly those who do not pursue a four-year college degree, are in urgent need of profound transformation. The current system fails to put most people on a path toward long-term economic mobility and security.
We believe there are approaches, grounded in data and offered through new technological tools, that can build a thriving talent marketplace among educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and employers that creates far better outcomes for young people.
56%
of young Americans believe they will be worse off economically than their parents
52%
of college graduates are underemployed
76%
of Gen Z surveyed said “they have a great future ahead” of them, but just 44% reported feeling prepared for it
This is why we invest in new approaches to expand economic opportunity for young adults.
Better navigation—fueled by better data, technology, pathways, entrepreneurship, and alignment among everyone in the talent marketplace—can be transformative for this generation of young adults, and those who will follow. Navigation enables a young person to discover, evaluate, and access tools, programs, and services that can help them acquire the skills and connections to build an economically mobile career.
Building on the insights gained from our investments to date, we have identified five broad goals that we believe can be transformative.
Invest in career pathways
to develop and expand opportunities for young people to find their purpose and chart a course to a fulfilling career.
Support development of new navigation technology tools
to strengthen how a young person discovers, evaluates and accesses relevant programs and services to launch an economically mobile career.
Partner in groundbreaking data projects
to lay the groundwork for meaningful changes to the navigation marketplace across employers, young people and education institutions.
Invest in entrepreneurs
who are building the next generation of businesses to fuel job-creation and economic growth.
Lead initiatives in our hometown of Seattle
to improve access to opportunity for all young people in our community.
